How to Pack In a Carry-on for Your Next Trip

Writer's picture: Nichole WinterNichole Winter

I know the question for many of you is to check a bag or not to. I am 50/50, it really depends on the trip. I do think packing a carry-on is way more convenient. Here is why: less to pack saves time, less packed means less laundry and less to unpack. Also less steps in your travel day, not  going to the bag drop line and no waiting for your luggage at the carousel.

Packing in a carry-on doesn’t mean sacrificing style or essentials. With a little planning and smart techniques, you can travel light and stress-free.

Here are a few things to consider and some tips to help you with your carry on!

Choose the Right Bag

  • Opt for a lightweight, durable carry-on suitcase that meets airline size requirements. It is just easier since you will be taking it with you through the airport.

  • Use a compact personal item like a backpack or tote to maximize your space. You know I love a backpack for my personal item, it keeps my hands free.

Plan Your Wardrobe

  • Stick to a Color Palette: Pack neutral basics and mix-and-match pieces to create multiple outfits. This i find saves on shoes and you can mix and match outfits easier.

  • Layer Smartly: Bring lightweight layers like cardigans or jackets that can be worn in different climates.

  • Limit Shoes: Bring one pair of walking shoes, one versatile pair for evenings, and flip-flops or sandals.

Pack Efficiently

  • Use Packing Cubes: Organize clothes by type and compress items to save space.

  • Roll, Don’t Fold: Rolling your clothes minimizes wrinkles and maximizes space.

  • Use Every Inch: Fill shoes with socks or small items, and use the space inside hats.

Pack Essentials Thoughtfully

  • Toiletries: Bring travel-sized bottles (3.4 oz. or smaller) in a clear, resealable bag. Here is a tip, not all liquids you will even need 3 oz. you can purchase small items to fill your liquids in. This has made a difference in my liquid baggie.

  • Electronics: Keep chargers, adapters, and headphones in your personal item for easy access.

  • Travel Documents: Use a travel wallet or envelope or organizer for your passport, tickets, and ID.

Extra Tips

  • Wear Bulky Items: Save space by wearing your heaviest shoes and jacket during travel.

  • Laundry Plan: If your trip is longer, plan to do laundry to avoid overpacking.

  • Minimize “Just in Case” Items: Pack only what you know you’ll use. Really think about your vacation itinerary and consider the weather in your destination.

Packing in a carry-on keeps travel simple. I hope you give some of these tips a try on your next adventure!  Happy travels!
