After years of traveling with three teens who are now young adults, I realized it was time to share a few tips. I’ve often told my clients how much easier it was to entertain little ones at the pool or beach—give them a bucket and shovel, and they’re set for the day. But as my kids grew older, I found that I needed to put more thought into keeping them entertained and ensuring they had a great time on our trips.
I’ve put together some essential tips and a packing list to help you make the most of your trip.
1. Engage Your Teenager in Some of the Planning
Choose the Destination Together:
Involve your teen in selecting the vacation spot to ensure it’s a place they’re excited about. Talk about what each destination is known for. I am sure they have seen a TikTok or something on Instagram that gave them ideas for your next family vacation.
Discuss Activities:
You can have conversations about what your resort and destination has to offer. Talking about activities they’re interested in, such as surfing, snorkeling, ziplining etc. is not only fun but it will give you an idea on what to plan.
Plan Excursions:
Let them pick one or two excursions or special outings they’d like to try, like a boat tour or a visit to a nearby island. It is a lot of fun to let them pick an activity. A fun story - on a past trip I remember my nephew picked fly fishing, I thought really? We all did that fishing excursion and it was our top favorite of the trip. Added bonus for letting the teens pick: they get us parents/adults to do something we may not pick on our own.
2. Focus on Flexibility and Freedom
Teens often value their independence, so it’s important to build some flexibility into your vacation itinerary. And also some down time! Allow them some free time to explore the resort on their own or maybe with their siblings. While this happens you can sit back and relax! Many all-inclusive resorts offer activities and spaces specifically designed for teens, such as game rooms or teen clubs, where they can socialize and enjoy their own downtime while you have a chance to relax.
3. Pack Smart and Bring the Essentials
Packing for a beach vacation involves more than just swimwear and sunscreen. To keep your teen entertained and comfortable, consider bringing the following items:
Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is essential for protecting your teen from the sun while adding a stylish touch to their beach attire.
Football, Frisbee or Volleyball: These are great for beach games and can provide hours of fun for the whole family. Plus, engaging in sports is a fantastic way for teens to stay active.
Spikeball: It is the BEST beach game. I broke ours down into pieces and packed it in my suitcase. It was a HIT! My teens played it on the beach (other kids and employees from the resorts entertainment staff played too) entertainment.
Insulated Mug: An insulated mug keeps drinks cold or hot for longer periods, which is perfect for staying hydrated during beach outings.
Deck of Cards: A deck of cards can be a great way to pass the time during downtime or in the evenings. It’s also a fun activity that can involve the whole family.
Snorkeling Set: This depends on your destination. We love to pack our two sets and have along with us for our adventures. Just being able to snorkel whenever is so much fun! If you do not have a lot of space, leave the flippers at home. Most of the time you do not need them.
4. Stay Connected and Safe
Make sure your teen knows the importance of staying safe while enjoying their independence. Establish clear communication plans, like setting meeting points and times, and ensure they have a way to contact you if needed. Also having a plan on when they will check in if they are roaming around the resort on their own.
Our family has so many great memories from family vacations. It is a different vacation when they are teens compared to when they were little! We loved it. They encouraged me to be brave on some activities. We tried new foods together. They surfed for many hours while I watched and relaxed on the beach and so much more!
By incorporating these tips and packing essentials, you’ll create a beach vacation that caters to both your family’s needs and your teen’s interests. With a little planning and preparation, you’ll set the stage for a memorable and enjoyable trip that everyone will cherish.
